Freediving & snorkeling with orcas and whales / Morgan Bourc'his - 8 days
A remote fishermen island
Based on a small island with only 15 inhabitants, at the heart of the "herring migration zone", we stay in an authentic fisherman's house. During the day we explore the majestic fjords, searching for orcas and whales feeding on herring, getting in the water when the situation allows, following strict rules to approach the animals in a ethical way. We head back to the harbour when the light goes down, and hopefully get to enjoy some Northern lights in the evening!
A solid expedition ship
We spend the days at sea onboard our solid and comfortable expedition ship, exploring the fjords and searching for cetaceans without time limit. Our cosy ship provides a good shelter to warm-up between the dives and enjoy a warm expedition lunch. Water temperature is about +5°C, whereas the ship is heated up around +20°C.
Adjusting to the weather & daylight
The fjords remoteness and potentially challenging weather conditions demand a flexible tour schedule. We adjust the planning to the weather updates, wind and available daylight, starting early morning to spend a maximum of time at sea.
Special snorkelling equipment
Each participant have his personal snorkelling equipment. Weights are included, the rest can be rented on request : diving suit, boots, gloves, mask, fins and diving belt.
Experienced crew and diving instructor
Delphine is skippering the ship, while Espen makes sure everything runs smooth with the logistics. He also cooks delicious local food : fresh fish, reindeer, moose... Our diving instructor Our diving instructors are internationally certified with several years of experience from diving with whales in arctic waters. They will make sure you stay safe in the water. After the morning Safety briefing, we are ready to set in the water!
An ethical approach
Some days there will be many possibilities to meet the animals, some other days not : nature rules! We make a point of having an ethical approach, never chasing the cetaceans, and we only set in the water when we are sure we don't disturb them!
It is not necessary to dive to join the tour : the adventure is also appropriated if you are interested in wildlife and nature photography.
Day 1 : pick-up in Tromsø at 09:00 and travel by minibus and ferry-boats to the island. Test-dives with the equipment in the afternoon. First night on the island.
Day 2 to 8 : after breakfast we meet for a safety briefing & weather update, before going at sea. Depending on weather / sea conditions we explore fjords and islands like Jøkelfjord, Haukøya and Skorpa. Each day we spend about 6 to 8 hours navigating through these beautiful landscapes. We have lunch at sea and spend nights in our fisherman's cabin. In the afternoon of day 8 we return to Tromsø after a last morning at sea.
