Snorkeling week with Orcas & Whales
During this trip, we travel to a remote fishermen's island, located at the heart of the "Herring migration zone". We stay in a fisherman's house, and go at sea every day with our solid little expedition-boat, searching for orcas and humpback whales.
We adjust our schedule to the weather, wind and available daylight, starting early morning to spend a maximum of time at sea, and exploring between 6 and 8hours per day by boat. Each participant have his own snorkelling equipment, and jumps in the water following the instructions of our Diving instructor Sébastien Royer, specialised in polar regions, every time the conditions allows. Our cosy and comfortable boat provides a good shelter to warm-up between the dives. Water temperature is about +5 degrees and the ship is heated up around +20 degrees. Some days it will be many possibilities to snorkel with the animals, and some other days not, nature rules! We make a point of having an ethical approach, never chasing the orcas and whales, and we only set in the water when we are sure we don't disturb the animals!
We spend the day at sea, and enjoy a warm expedition lunch in our comfortable heated ship. We head back to the harbour when the light goes down, and hopefully get to enjoy some northern lights in the evening!
It is not necessary to dive to join the tour : the week is also very appropriated if you are interested in Wildlife, Landscapes and Nature photography!
The days are varied, exploring deep majestic fjords, with steep cliffs falling straight into the sea, orange and purple clouds lightening the sky over the fishing vessels. There is a long tradition of fishermen's communities catching cod and herring in the area, and we observe the fishing vessels working at sea. The fjords remoteness and the potentially challenging weather conditions demand a flexible tour schedule. The tour will be adjusted to weather conditions at a daily basis!
Day 1 : pick-up in Tromsø at 09:00 and travel by minibus and ferry-boats to the island. Test-dives in the afternoon. First night on the island.
Day 2 to 8 : after breakfast we meet for a Safety briefing & weather update, before going at sea searching for orcas and whales and exploring the fjords. Depending on weather and sea conditions we explore fjords and islands like Jøkelfjord, Haukøya and Skorpa. Each day we spend about 6 to 8 hours sailing through this beautiful landscapes. We have lunch at sea and spend nights in our fisherman's cabin. In the afternoon of day 8 we return to Tromsø after a last morning at sea.
All our activities are easy to moderate. In the fisherman's house, we sleep in mixed bedroom with both gentlemen and women. Our little expedition ship is heated and has electricity and fresh water facilities. No former diving / snorkelling experience is required, but you must be in a correct physical shape to endure the cold temperatures and long days at sea!
