Discover the wild fjords of Northern Norway, where orcas and humpback whales gather each winter. From our remote home in Reinfjord, we explore the Arctic coast aboard our sailboat, Mutine, searching for whales, visiting tiny fishing villages, sailing beneath dramatic mountains and discovering some of the most beautiful landscapes in the region. Five nights of Arctic adventures, home-cooked meals, a wood-fired sauna and life by the sea, far from the crowds.

Orcas, whales, and the wild Arctic

Every autumn, huge shoals of herring attract orcas and humpback whales to the fjords of Northern Norway, creating one of the Arctic's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles.

We head out aboard our sailboat to look for these magnificent animals in their natural environment. Some days we may encounter large groups of orcas, others we may watch humpback whales feeding or simply enjoy the incredible wildlife and landscapes around us.

But there is much more to Kvænangen than whales. This expedition is also an invitation to discover the wild and beautiful Arctic coast, its remote villages, mountains, glaciers and fascinating history.

Exploring Kvænangen by sailboat

Our sailboat, Mutine, gives us the freedom to explore places that are difficult to reach by road.

We may sail towards Jøkelfjord and the spectacular Øksfjordjøkelen glacier, visit the island of Spildra with its rich history, explore tiny fishing settlements or enjoy a walk ashore. There may also be opportunities for a little fishing along the way.

Each day is different. We choose our route according to the weather, the sea conditions and what we would most like to discover together.

And when the orcas and whales are around, we will of course make the most of the opportunity to observe them!

Our home in Reinfjord

Our base is a cosy house right by the fjord in Reinfjord, a tiny village accessible only by boat.

Rather than living aboard the sailboat throughout the expedition, we return to the comfort of our home after our days exploring the fjords. There is a wood-fired sauna, home-cooked meals and plenty of time to relax, share stories and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

With the mountains rising straight from the sea and almost no artificial light, Reinfjord is also a wonderful place to watch for the Northern Lights on clear evenings.

Small groups, personal experiences

We welcome a maximum of six guests, keeping our expeditions small, personal and flexible.

Your hosts are Delphine and Espen, who share a love for the Arctic, sailing and life in these remote fjords. Delphine is a former merchant navy officer and has been guiding whale-watching expeditions in Kvænangen since 2017.

With our own sailboat and our home in Reinfjord, we can take the time to explore, enjoy unexpected encounters and adapt the days to the group and the conditions.

It is not a conventional cruise, but a chance to experience a little of our life in the Arctic.

More than whale watching

This expedition is for curious travellers, nature lovers and photographers who want to experience Northern Norway beyond the usual tourist routes.

We spend our days discovering the fjords, observing wildlife, sailing and exploring ashore. Depending on the weather, we may visit remote villages, walk along the coast, discover the landscapes around Jøkelfjord or simply enjoy the extraordinary Arctic light.

We also leave time to slow down, enjoy the sauna and appreciate the quiet beauty of Reinfjord.

There is no fixed daily programme. The freedom to follow the best conditions and the discoveries of each day is part of the experience.

Respectful wildlife encounters

We believe the most beautiful wildlife encounters happen when animals are free to behave naturally.

When observing orcas and whales, we follow local whale-watching guidelines, respect their space and adapt our approach to their behaviour.

All whale encounters on this expedition take place from the boat. For guests interested in entering the water, we offer a separate Orca Snorkeling Expedition.

Physical level

A reasonable level of fitness, good balance and mobility are required. Guests should be comfortable moving around a sailboat, stepping between the boat and a smaller tender, and walking on uneven or potentially slippery surfaces.

No previous sailing experience is necessary. Walks ashore can be adapted to the group and weather conditions.

As this is a nature-based expedition, the programme remains flexible and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Our expeditions are based in Reinfjord, with daily sailing adventures exploring the surrounding fjords and coastline.

The same departure dates are offered for our Orca Snorkeling Expedition. Each departure is dedicated to one expedition or the other, depending on which is booked first.

Getting to Reinfjord

Reinfjord is a tiny village on the coast of Northern Norway, accessible only by boat.

The usual journey is via Tromsø and Skjervøy, followed by a local boat connection to Reinfjord.

We recommend arriving in Northern Norway at least one day before the expedition and allowing some flexibility for your return journey, as winter weather can occasionally affect coastal transport.

We will be happy to help you plan your journey and check the most suitable connections before you book your flights.

Travel insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering cancellation, delays, medical expenses and emergency assistance is required.

Any additional travel or accommodation costs resulting from transport disruptions remain the responsibility of the guest.
