Small-Group Orca Snorkeling Expedition

Our home base is Reinfjord, a tiny roadless village tucked away in the fjords of Northern Norway, where our cosy house by the sea is the perfect place to return to after a day with the whales.

From here, we head out aboard our sailboat, Mutine, to explore the waters where orcas and humpback whales gather during the herring season.

With just three guests and two crew members, the atmosphere is relaxed and personal. We share meals, stories and the excitement of being out at sea together.

And when the orcas move further away, our sailboat gives us the wonderful possibility of spending nights aboard, closer to where the action is.

• 5 nights' accommodation, normally at our fjord-front base in Reinfjord, with the possibility of nights aboard our sailboat depending on orcas location

Following the herring, searching for orcas and whales

Every autumn and winter, large schools of herring attract orcas and humpback whales to the fjords of Northern Norway.

Some days we may encounter several groups of whales, while on others we spend hours searching, watching the sea and following signs of wildlife.

That is part of the experience. These are wild animals, moving freely through a vast Arctic landscape, and every day brings something different.

A flexible expedition, shaped by the whales and the weather

Our expedition is normally based at our cosy fjord-front house in Reinfjord, with a wood-fired sauna and our sailboat just outside the door.

The orcas follow the herring, and their movements can take them to different parts of the coast. With only three guests, we have the freedom to adapt and follow them when conditions allow.

Sometimes this means spending a night or two aboard Mutine, waking up closer to the whales and making the most of the short Arctic daylight.

If the whales move further east for the season, we may also arrange a different coastal base, always keeping the same small-group spirit and personal approach.

We will confirm the meeting point and accommodation arrangements with you before your departure.

A small expedition, with a crew who knows these waters

We welcome a maximum of three guests, accompanied by two crew members.

This is not a large whale-watching vessel, and that is exactly how we like it. We share the same boat, the same meals and the excitement of every encounter.

Delphine is a professional skipper and former merchant navy officer, with over ten years of experience guiding whale-watching and snorkeling expeditions in Northern Norway.

Espen is our second guide, helping guests prepare for their time in the water and supporting the snorkeling activities alongside Delphine.

Together, we bring years of experience working and travelling in the Arctic, and we love sharing this extraordinary part of Norway with our guests.

Snorkeling with orcas – for experienced cold-water snorkelers

With just three guests and two crew members, we can take the time to prepare carefully for each encounter and enjoy the experience without rushing.

When the weather, sea conditions and animal behaviour allow, we may enter the water to observe orcas in their natural environment.

Espen helps guests prepare for snorkeling, while Delphine oversees the expedition and navigation.

We provide snorkeling equipment and cold-water protection. Guests should be confident swimmers, in good physical condition, and ideally have previous experience snorkeling or diving in cold water.

As with any wildlife expedition, entering the water is never guaranteed. Every decision is made with safety and respect for the animals in mind.

Ethical encounters

Respect for wildlife is at the heart of our expeditions.

We approach every encounter with patience and care, following applicable Norwegian regulations and responsible whale-watching practices.

We never chase or deliberately disturb the orcas. Whether we observe them from the boat or consider entering the water, their behaviour and the conditions determine what is possible.

Sometimes the most memorable encounters happen when we simply wait and let the wildlife come to us.
